Debbie Reynolds Auctions Historic Hollywood Costumes

20 Jun

On June 19th, Debbie Reynolds auctioned her historic collection of Hollywood costumes and props.  Assembled over 50 years, Ms. Reynolds amassed one of the most important collections of iconic costumes.  Click here for the Hollywood Reporter pre-sale article.  The sale included Marilyn Monroe’s white “subway grate” dress from The Seven Year Itch.  Estimated to sell between $1 and $2 million, the iconic dress sold for $4.6 million (including buyer’s premium) – a record for Hollywood memorabila!

The phenomenal auction results from this sale begs the question: how do you value celebrity?  And more importantly, how do you value iconic items worn by the best of Hollywood and collected by one of the best of Hollywood?  In this case, it’s best to let the market decide the value.  Suggest an auction estimate that’s conservative, yet worthy, of the iconic piece and then let it fly!
